Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carolin KÖRNER

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carolin KÖRNER

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Department Material Science, Erlangen, Germany, EU

Carolin Körner received her diploma as a theoretical physicist in 1991 from the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). After her change to the Technical Faculty and the Materials Science Department she received her PhD in 1997 from FAU for a theoretical work on the interaction of short pulse lasers with metals (Group of Prof. H.W. Bergmann). In 1997 she started as the leader of a new group “Lightweight materials” at the chair of Prof. R.F Singer and received the Georg Sachs award for her outstanding research on metal foams. After maternal leave in 2000 she received her Dr. Habilitus in 2007 for her work on Injection foam molding of light metals which she was honored with the Finkelnburg Award. In 2011 she declined two offers for an appointment as full professor at the University of Kassel and Cottbus. In November 2011, she has been appointed Full Professor of Materials Science and Technology for Metals at FAU. In 2015 she was appointed Scientific head of the Group “Additive Manufacturing” at the NMF GmbH, a research company of the Bavarian state. Since 2016 she is also head of the Group “Additive Manufacturing” at the Central Institute of “New Processes and Materials” of FAU in Fürth. In 2015 she declined an offer as full professor for Additive Manufacturing at RWTH Aachen. The PI’s research group numbers over 20 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Key research interests

The Körner group's research is characterized by a distinct commitment to interdisciplinarity combining material science, physics and modeling and simulation including high performance computing. The group has two main research fields: casting technology (investment casting, pressure die casting) and additive manufacturing (mainly electron beam based AM but also laser based AM). The research focus is on the research and development of innovative processes and alloys in the field of lightweight and high-performance materials. Thereby modeling and simulation is the basis for gaining profound process understanding and the development of new materials (new alloys, metamaterials such as auxetics or phononic band-gap materials).
